Detecting the various types of outdoor sprinkler leaks

A burst pipe can cause major plumbing problems at your property, including the following:

  • You will find a pool of water in the lower areas. This will also create mold and mildew which will slowly kill your lawn.
  • Carefully look at the sprinkler system, if there is any unevenness in the spray this could be because of debris which will fail the complete coverage.

 External Leak Detection

Here are some other ways to help you detect an external leak in your outdoor sprinkler system.

  1. Remove the sprinkler heads in the irrigation system. To do so, you will help to turn the sprinkler head anti-clockwise and unscrew it and lift it. Use the special head key or flat screwdriver to unlock the head of some models.
  2. Use a paperclip to remove the screen that lies underneath the sprinkler head to remove the screen. Rinse the screen clean by keeping it under running water.
  3. Turn the sprinkler system on at the control then observe the flow at each head. You will notice that that last sprinkler head should pour the water out in a fountain and it is nothing to worry about.
  4. Now you can turn off the sprinkler as the debris are completely flushed out.
  5. Now replace the screen and the last sprinkler head. Turn back the controller and observe the sprinkler heads again. You will notice that there is immediate pop up on the riser and the water emits at the same rate.
  6. Remove grass if there are any near the sprinkler.
  7. Look for odd spray pattern, clean the screen again, as it can be due to debris to avoid any clogging.
  8. If there are any cracked nozzles, replace it immediately.
  9. Look for any tilted sprinkler head, straighten them.
  10. Once you have followed all the steps, you can turn on the controller and allow the system to complete the irrigation cycle.
