Amazon EC2 – A Deeper Look

Amazon EC2 stands forElastic Compute Cloud. It works within ever evolving the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure, and it allows subscribers to operate application programs in a computing setting, otherwise known as instances. With Amazon EC2 instances, you will no longer need to invest in hardware, meaning that the deployment of your applications will be a lot quicker. It can also be used to launch virtual services as needed, arrange networks, security and control storage. Furthermore, it can let you track and manage popularity spikes and scale up or down; in order for you to cut your needs to forecast traffic.

When launching an Amazon EC2 instance, the instance that is chosen accords to the hardware of the computer or device that is used for it. Amazon EC2will grant you with reliable and constant quantities of CPU. EC2 can share resources of its host device; if more than one instance is used, they will each receive an equal share of the resource.

There is no such thing as a single Amazon EC2 instance. In fact, there is a wide variety of Amazon EC2 instance types that are appropriately designed to fit the different needs and requirements of their customers and workload requirements. To narrow it down, Amazon EC2 instances are divided into multiple clusters, categorized based on target profiles. For example, general purpose, memory optimized, computer optimized, storage-optimized, GPU instances and micro instances.

General purpose Amazon EC2 instance types include T2, M5, M4. These provide a well-rounded range of services; compute, networking resources and memory, which means that they can be used for a variety of different tasks. For example, gaming servers, microservices, web applications and running backend servers for Microsoft SharePoint, SAP and others.

Memory optimized Amazon EC2 instance types are known as R4, X1 and X1e instances. These instances are built to be fast in performance for tasks that require large amounts of memory space. For example, R4 instances are mostly used for high-performance computing and in-memory databases for business intelligence. X1 and X1e are similar and are appropriate to tackle high-performance and in-memory databases.

Compute optimizedAmazon EC2 instances are particularly beneficial to use for compute-bound applications. For example, scientific modeling, media transcoding, and dedicated serving engines and gaming servers. This instance eliminates contention between other network traffic and provides a notably higher PPS performance. Compute optimized instances are identified as C4 and C5 instances.

Storage optimized Amazon EC2 instances are not to be confused with memory optimized Amazon EC2 instance types. These instances are assembled for workloads that demand sequential and intense “read and write” access and availability to immense data sets on local storage. They are designed to deliver countless random I/O operations per second to applications of low latency. These are mostly known as D2 instances, H1 instances, and I3 instances. Overall storage optimized instances are well suited for relational databases, MPP data warehouse, data processing applications, MapReduce and distributed file systems among many other applications.
