What is a Cyber Range and how does it work?

Posted by NowlesNorman in Internet on January 29th, 2019

The Internet has made it possible for crimes like identity theft and other cyber crimes to be easier to pull off. That's why it is necessary to have a security system, and sometimes you have to test your system. Leaving anything up to chance is a surefire way to lose your business. This is why Cyber Ranges were developed.

A Cyber Range is defined by Techopedia as “a virtual environment that is used for cyber warfare training and cyber technology development. It provides tools that help strengthen the stability, security, and performance of cyber infrastructures and IT systems used by government and military agencies.”

DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, is creating the National Cyber Range at this point in time. The goal of this cyber range will be to ensure they have a realistic cyber simulation for GIG research and to ensure they have a realistic virtual space to test new and improved cyber technologies.

Cyber ranges are like zones for weapon training, in that they are safe spaces, except the zone is used for cyber security training. Because these zones are all virtual, the government and military agencies can manipulate them into any type of cyber security simulation they want. It is the perfect place to test trial and error. Most cybercrimes occur quickly before anyone has the chance to notice it happening. The quickest and easiest cyber attack happens through email.

Not every person is aware of scam emails, but they are how most systems get a virus. One bad link can cause a major shut down of a security system. This is why a cyber range comes in handy because you can simulate the email hacking and figure out the best way to defend against it.

Why should you work on your cyber security and make it as strong as it can be? Sixty-six percent of organizations are unable to recover from a real cyber attack. This is because 80% of organizations do not use cyber security products. Not using the tools at your disposal is the first mistake, and can cost you your whole operation.

Cybersecurity is important to retain the privacy of every citizen in our country, and it starts in the small businesses. Take the time to test your security system, and employ cyber range to simulate different cyber attacks.
